From the set of "The New World"
Colin Farrell Fansite is lucky enough to have a member who won a part as an extra in "The New World". To protect her privacy, we are keeping her identity private. The following are some of her updates from the set:
-Aug 8:I know Colin is currently filming his new movie in Williamsburg, Virginia and ealier when they were looking for native americans lookalike, or I guess anyone w/ dark hair and tan skin, I tried out and put my picture into the casting areas. They called me once, but for some reason I could not go and so they called me again. I went for wardrobe, hair and makeup and now I am going to be an extra in the movie shooting their big scene next week!!! tha's unbelievable. But they were very strict about no cameras or cell phones, well I guess I can understand that. But it's still amazind, hopefully Ill meet colin farrell.!!
-Aug 14:Ok, here is an update from Aug. 11-13. It was an awesome adventure. I actually SAW Colin Farrell. Ok on Aug.11 my call time and other extra call time was 5:30 in the morning. It took about 2 hours to wait in lines to get hair and makeup done. But it was all worth it. Then the extra's was put on this wagon thing and taken to the set. As I was entering the set, it was a man made entire village extremely detailed. Then they just threw extras in a scene they were shooting..and then I see then filming..clearly I had no idea what to do..then I see colin farrell being pushed around by other native american look alike actors..I was soo shocked..i had no idea i would be seeing colin. The scene was john smith taking across the village to go to the main loghouse to meet powatan. The extras had to be surprised and also scared running towards him to touch his armor in amazement. I did touch his armor and he was soo good looking. He had semi long hair, black, w/ a short beard growing. The director is such a genius but they did that scene soo many times from different angles. It was very long and ppl were tired. but it is all worth it...ill tell you what happened on aug. 12 and 13 in my next post..im just tire b/c i got back last night and I havent slept in such a long time from the excitement...
-Aug 14:HEHE ok now I'm kinda awake from taking a nice long nap. Colin seemed pretty tall to me but that's because he was wearing thick clothes made out of brown cloth of some sort, on Aug. 11, he was wearing what seemed to be heavy armor. Everything they said cut since he was basically being thrown down on the ground b/c the extras (native americans) were supposed to do that b/c he was someone that nobody has ever seen before
Ok, when malick called cut, he would always go back and sit down under a wooden bench. On Aug. 12, they did inside scenes w/ the elder extras, chiefs, servers, and maidens. The set seemed so real and the part they shooted was when the native americans has now captured John Smith (Aug. 11) and taken him inside to see Powhatan.
They shot all from diff angles and it must have taken so long. Powhatan, who is speaking I guess what native americans spoke long time ago, and Raoul (i forgot his name in the movie) is translating what Powhatan is saying. They are asking John (Colin) why he is there, where have you come from, and basically when do they (colonists) will leave. Then w/o giving too plot away (well i guess you guys know what the plot is anyways), they do some other rituals. Later that day, Pocahontas (Qorianka) comes onto set. They do just one shot, her friends are surrounding her and malick tells them to look surprised. I think this might be in the previews b/c she was there for about 5 min.
She is incredibally beautiful and a great actress. I know this movie is going to become an instant hit.
-Aug 15:It must be tiring for them b/c they are acting under intense lighting. I never realized how hard it is to be an actor or actress after seeing it myself, it just takes the energy out of you putting forth all the effort you can to make the movie so believable. Their performance were about 1 million percent. You have to keep in mind that there are other actors there also that are amazing, like Wes Studi, Michael Greyes (i dont kno how to spell his name), Raoul, and others that has been in the business far longer than colin and qorianka. Im just glad I had the experience to see that and what goes on.
-Aug 16:Here is what happened when I was on the set on Aug. 13, Friday. Well On Aug. 12, they did mostly scenes in the main loghouse where Powhatan resides. Friday, most of the extras were supposed to be there and there was a huge celebration as John Smith was taken out to the village along with Pocahontas and Powhatan and the other chiefs. They said that the film may come out a year later, maybe sometime in November, but I am really not sure. They also said that they might to some scenes just of the village of the indians. Like working, I dont know if Qorianka or Colin would be there, but if they were that would be just awesome.
As I was onset, I talked to one of the zone 1 (who are mostly going to be in the movie alot) indian guys and they told me that for 2 weeks, they had to go through some sort of a boot camp, every morning they would wake up and do yoga, then do some training to build up some muscle and become toned. That is true dedication to me. They dont work everyweek but call them as they need them. Things can change very quickly in the schedule.
-Aug 18:I was there for 3 days on set going through makeup, hair, wardrobe, in long lines was tough. The food was good and they really made the food there and grilled it somehow. But they seperated from the cast and crew meals w/ the extra's meals. We first go through wardrobe/makeup/hair, then whenever they start shooting, 6 hours after that, we can have lunch, then start shooting again another 6 hours until they have to release us. My shoes were made out of leather so I got mud all up inthere and it was squishy. But I met alot of cool extras that were nice and it was fun b/c the extra thing was new to them also. There were some kids on set but not alot. The kids on set were just playing around basically, you know kids, and at the point when the kids were playing together, Malick and crew thought it would be cute to film them just playing around in thier costumes so he filmed it for about 30 min. it was soo adorable... Overlooking the set is a humungo river, the set was so real.
-Aug 23:The shoot on Monday was with only few extras. The scene was when Smith gets to know Pocahontas just wandering around the village. He feels more comfortable w/ them. That was about the whole day. I was actually in the van with Wes, Poca, Myrto, and Raoul when they were going to the set. It was so cool being surrounded by actors. The shoot was so great.
