Synopsis

The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans faced off against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. In spite of insurmountable odds, they fought to the death to defend their honor and freedom, inspiring all of Greece to unite against the enemy.

Review

Those hoping for a lot of new material in the Limited Collector‘s Edition 300, released Nov. 18th, won’t be very impressed when they pop in the third disc and find just one documentary added. Although it is the only addition as far as actual content, compared to the Two Disc Special Edition, the doc, titled To The Hot Gates: A Legend Retold, is an interesting piece running a little under 30 minutes and answering a lot of questions as to how Frank Miller and Zack Snyder decided on certain aspects of characters. It covers things that should have been covered in Making of 300 on the second disc but were left out, such as shooting with a green screen and the differences in how actors portrayed larger than life characters, like the giant and executioner. Although it is disheartening, as a fan of the movie, to see the messengers killed near the beginning of the movie falling not into a well but into a small pit of cardboard boxes, it’s a must see for Frank Miller fans wondering how they made such a smooth transition from a graphic novel to the screen.

The neatest part of this Collector’s Edition just might be the toys it comes with. The trading cards might be a bit much, but the hologram depicting King Leonidas throwing his spear and the 52-page book mixing bits of the graphic novel with scenes from the movie both make for good additions to any movie fan’s DVD collection. I suppose putting swords in each box set would have been drastic, so this is as much as any 300 fan could ask for. Altogether, a great Christmas gift, you know, “If it is blood you seek.”
